Nimbus Mini

Sensory Cloud created an original device for the drink industry called Nimbus. When COVID hit, the company pivoted to a health remedy that used a saline solution called FEND that could be delivered as a mist by the Nimbus device.

In this project to create a pocketable device, Devlin shrank the main components in to a module that could screw on to a bottle of the saline solution.

Charger

This is a concept study of an automatic dispensing battery charger. Just drop the dead batteries at the top, and grab new ones at the bottom that have been charged through a rotating, auto-sizing charger. Works for AA and AAA batteries and can be plugged directly in to the wall, or by cord.

Ziplock

The company was looking to upgrade its remote lock system. After a concept was approved, a block model was created for evaluation. This concept employed a custom branded attachment adhesive pad.

Flat Battery

Before cell phones, there were PDAs - personal digital assistants. At the time, customers were more accustomed to changing batteries than charging stations. This was a study in flat rechargeable batteries. Each battery compartment design had to accommodate a square 3 volt batteies, or rectangular 1.5 volt batteries

Cognio

RF Spectrum Analyzer

This technology allows an institution such as a hospital to manage the many wireless communication technologies within its walls, detecting interference, and optimizing performance.

Devlin used a folding plastic technique similar to cardboard model-making for short run fabrication of enclosures.

Dynalabs

Dynalyzer

This bench-top spectrometer can analyzed fluids on-site in a medical facility. It replaces the existing system of sending out samples for analysis to remote lab, saving time and shipping expense. Devlin arranged and designed the enclosure, and developed the specialized slides that are used to analyze fluids.

Services
Industrial Design, Design for Manufacture

Desk

The client needed an entire line of desk accessories using hardwood.  Devlin created a number of product families.  The preferred design was documented for production

Optical Tile

Co-developed for the University of Pennsylvania Astrophysics department, these injection molded tiles with anti-reflection coating help absorb stray light inside the Simons telescope when arrayed in rings on the inside. Devlin was credited in the resulting scientific paper

Paper Burster

Before laser printers, offices had large machines that would remove the margins of tractor-fed paper and separate the sheets. Curtis Manufacturing wanted a compact desktop version. Devlin designed the mechanical system and built a working prototype for focus group evaluation.

ElectricFilm

Solar Panel

ElectricFilm had a thin film solar technology that could harvest power in low-light situations. Devlin developed a PVC extrusion that could house the collector and rechargeable batteries to create a motorized blind power source

MT100 Sensor

MicroSpectral Sensors needed a concept model to explore the possibility of a device that could measure oxygen levels using a skin contact sensor. This had potential for use in the military.

Services:

DNA Analysis

Intelligent Biosystems

Devlin designed front facade of a DNA analyzer. The emphasis was on smooth lines and ease of cleaning.

Services
Industrial Design

Hatch

The client needed a new treatment to its automatic laboratory equipment. Devlin produced a series of concepts based on the limitations of the sheet metal bending process.

Services
Industrial Design

Shave

This was an exploration in applying shaving cream. The rechargeable applicator pushes gel from a removable cartridge through to a moistened and heated pad that rotates against the skin to create a lather. A sealed base station provided heat and power through induction. Devlin designed the product and mechanisms and worked with an electrical engineer to create the induction station. The prototype was fully functional.

On-Site Analysis

CoolCheck

This table-top spectrometer was developed for use in garages to check engine coolant. With a specialized cartridge developed by Devlin, a user can quickly determine any problems with a coolant without the need to send out for testing.

IEC

The centrifuge company needed an update to its line of centrifuges. Devlin created a design language across the series that tripled sales.

Toy Reader

A startup company was exploring a method to teach reading with a device that could detect special printing in area on a book, then play the pre-recorded text for that location.

Services
Industrial Design

Pictronics

Before camera phones, Pictronics saw a need to record the ideas on the white board at the end of a meeting with a digital camera specially built for the purpose.  The image would download and distribute on the office network.  Devlin designed a housings and delivered parts for a prototype.

SmartHUD

A Boston startup need a method for mounting a head’s up display on a car dashboard, and a control mounted on the steering wheel. Devlin designed the product and delivered working prototypes.

Vapor Communications

Tangential projects to the Cyrano technology, these were explorations in bringing scent experiences in to an automobile cabin.

Southwire

This swivel plug adapter allows for 3-prong plugs to be mounted sideways and close to the wall so they do not interfere with furniture.

Alcon

Microscissors

These are used for removal of neovascularization in the back of the eye, often caused by diabetes. The company wanted a disposable version of the tip that would always be sharp. The design required an innovative laser welding method of tiny photo etched blade blanks. A 10:1 model was made to illustrate the mechanism.

Custom Lights

This was an in-house project where found metal objects were re-purposed in to lighting.. A custom chandelier was created using discarded high-pressure copper gaskets from an astrophysics detector.

RoPole

Rose Displays

The company needed an inexpensive method for installing wire-formed hooks in to ceiling tile without a ladder. Numerous prototypes resulted in a geometry that was patented, and has been in use for 25 years.

Sensicast

Wireless Sensor Network

Sensicast needed a custom enclosure for its flexible wireless control technology. The product also required a NEMA 4 rating for outdoor use. The solution involved an auxiliary box that clamped with a gasket which would house watertight couplings. Devlin also designed a snap-on clip that makes wall mounting easy.

Music of the Plants

The company had developed a technology that could sense small electrical changes in a plant, and convert those signals in to soothing music. Devlin created an enclosure which was essentially an allegory of what the product was doing, with signals flowing out of the leaf in to a bar of music.

Concord Portex

Suction Catheter

The suction catheter is used for removal of material in the throat of patients on ventilators. The challenge was to develop an improved version that would not allow the escape of contaminated air within the bag the surrounds the catheter. A number of check valve alternatives were proposed and patented.
